If Christ Can be Born in a Stable

Mary

Peaceful and Bright Christmas to you and yours.

Years ago when I was a mere kid, Father Carriege was a "new" priest at our church. Father Carriege was cool, he had long hair, often was barefoot, and when he said the homily he did not stay up at the altar, instead he walked amongst the congregation. He was loved in our small town. He was the first Priest that I knew that made me feel that he was "like us" and not a "God". He seemed real, and his message was obtainable. He spoke to us and not above us.

I remember one Christmas when he said mass, he walked amongst us to say his homily. Usually a homily can take twenty minutes, and at Christmas it can go on for eternity… that is to say that Father Carriege stood up to say the homily and he said this and only this:

"If Christ can be born in a stable, then he can be born in our hearts."

It rocked my world, and I was never the same after that. Faith did not ask for perfection, for a five star hotel to be born into. His homily made me feel holy, made me feel that the best gift we could give is our open heart. To be ready to say yes, here I am.

Years later, on Christmas Eve, Father Carriege was killed by a drunk driver. I still can recall the shock of it as if it were yesterday.

Each and every Christmas Eve I think of him. He was someone who gave foundation to my faith. My stable is still a mess, but at least the door is open and my heart is listening.

Merry christmas

Do you have someone (or story) who showed you faith?

    Many, many years ago
when my son was 5 years old
he came to me after Sunday School
    and said, with excitement and
    such joy……….
Mom !!! Do you know ?!!!!
“Jesus loves me, even when I was a naughty boy”

  3. Corey, than you for sharing this. Beautifully written.
Here, where I live in West Hollywood, we have someone called the West Hollywood Jesus. He has hair several inches past his shoulders and a bear. He walks around the streets in an off-white robe, tied by rope at the waist, and often barefoot.
You can see pictures here if you are curious:

  4. My Dad, by the way he lived his life.
    Merry Christmas everyone!

  5. There have been so many influences along the way-like you mine was a priest named Father Kowal-He was pastor at the nearly newly founded parish of St. Anselm-He heard my first confession gave me my first communion presided with the bishop at confirmation-and all the while building the school the church and its place in the neighborhood-He was never pushy always asking “do you promise to do better-quiet unassuming and very wise-well I grew up and he was always the constant when I returned- crossing the street from the rectory to the live nativity he was hit and killed by a young man from the parish-details were sketchy at best…..but along the way there have been others for different and similar reasons-I think of him often and especially at Christmas-

Thank you, Corey. Merry Christmas (all twelve days of it)!

  9. Merry Christmas Corey! That is such a lovely story. Mine is complicated and veered off the path many times but I can say that my journey led me to a place I’d never dreamed of – I am a fire department chaplain/EMT and my faith is strong, strong enough to minister to the people who run in when others are running out.

  10. I really can’t point to one person. I have been blessed to be surrounded by “a great cloud of witnesses.” Some have passed, others don’t even know their influence. I would consider you part of them!

  11. About 7 years ago I had retired from one career and was working at a place I loved, but barely making ends meet. I was at the DMV counter to renew my license (at the last minute, of course) and had experienced an unexpected snag. While waiting to get that resolved, the kind lady in front of me said to a co-worker, “Fear is not faith.” I have no idea what they were talking about – that’s all I heard, but it struck me right where I lived because I was fearful of so many things at that point. That truth has stayed with me ever since and I hear her statement again whenever I am anxious. You never know when you will be given a lesson on faith – even at the DMV!
