How Many Hands?

Most things take a lifetime

which is easily forgotten

with cell phones, wifi, cars-

  Life is at our fingertips.

Whatever we want when we want it…click, snap, instant credit.

Such daily life routines, which use to be hours worth of labor, are readily available without much notice…

Time ticks on without us having to wind the clock-

Running water cold, warm or hot?

Need light, turn it on-

Warm home-

Gas station-

Dry hair-

Grocery store-

Buy bananas, tea, avocados or milk

in a town, let alone a country that doesn't produce such things.

 strawberries, tomatoes, pineapples, zucchini

out of season.

A friend use to say before a meal,

"How many hands did it take to bring me this?"

  1. What a wonderful thought to inspire gratitude and on the reverse side, to make the mundane more valued! Thank you for an ew way to look at things.

  2. So true, Corey. We have always expressed thanks before meals for those who made it possible for it to reach our table, and after seeing workers in the fields of the Salinas Valley on our visit in 2014 it brought that home even more. So much for which to be grateful!

  3. It is good to remember how many hands it took to deliver a product to you. I know on fresh produce I try to only buy from the west coast of the US. Sometimes I weaken because after all those grapes from Chili are calling my name, but mostly I stick to my rule.

  4. It is incredible..thank goodness for most of us we don’t have to go milk a cow or pump water or sew the family clothes like our great-grandparents had to.

  5. So very true. One of the things I love most about living in France and bringing up our children in France is that life is that little bit slower. Yes of course we have wifi and all modern technology but we also cannot get strawberries out of season, nor any other out of season produce for that matter, maybe if we drove to Paris, but here in the Charente Maritime, it is very much seasonal local produce only and I am very happy about that. Have a Lovely weekend.

Perhaps one of the most cherished gifts you have taught me is this message, I love it! Well, I also think of that fish 😉
