The French Farm in Bretagne for the Apartment in Cassis

Repost 2011

Grange

In the middle of a field stands an old farm house with an attached barn.

Nobody lives there,

It use to belong to his grand parents, who had farmers to manage it, we bought it many years ago.

Facade grange

It needs a great deal of work, the potential is vast.

It allows one to toy with many ideas that mainly start with,

"What if…"

Grange with slate roof

The slate roof has been restored.

The foundation is solid.

The massive beams sturdy.

The kitchen large with an open fireplace.

Farmhouse

French Husband remembers the farmers who use to work and live there. They would bring his Grandmother vegetables, eggs and milk.

Whenever we go to Rennes we visit "the farm".

As soon as we are there I sense him walking back to his childhood, I can see he sees it as it use to be.

Field behind the grange

He loves the land.

He imagines landing his plane in the field.

At times I think he thinks of living there.

I remind him that Provence is blue.

He reminds me that Bretagne is green.

Then I let him go back to his childhood.

Farmhouse facade

The farmhouse is empty but to French Husband it is alive.

I think the little French Boy in him lives there.

Though he grew up in a city.

And though I grew up on a farm… this is not the farm of my childhood. I do not see it as he sees it.

Inside the farmhouse

Kitchen wall

Fireplace in kitchen

French Husband talks about the massive wooden farm table that use to be in the center of the kitchen, the copper pans that hung from the mantle, the creamy milk that was offered to him when he would come to visit. He said, "The memories are so vivid, it feels their spirit is still here."

Dancing in the kitchen

… with that I imagined the farmer's wife wiping her hands on her apron, the farmer moving the table back into the corner, and while they clapped their hands to a magical tune, I grabbed the hands of the little boy who is now my husband and danced.

…..

We have decided to sell the farm house in Bretagne for the apartment in Cassis.

The entire apartment in Cassis could fit in the farm house's kitchen.

Are you looking for a massive farmhouse in Bretagne?

Oh please, please, please more stories and photos of life (from a real actual French person who really, actually grew up in France.) Of course I want a farm in the French countryside! Let me just run out and grab a lotto ticket…

  2. Oh, it really tugs at the heartstrings. I’f I won the lotto, would buy it, except it is “clear across the other side of France” from where you live.

  3. Oh if dreams came true and I could snap my fingers, I would wish upon a star. But like you I do believe the blue would woo me and off I would run to the shore.

  4. Sometimes it’s hard to let go.

  5. What a shame to sell it! Maybe Chelsea and Sacha could buy it and turn it into a living history farm or an artist’s retreat center or a place to make movies or something. Then Yann could still go and re-visit his childhood! So hard to let go of such beautiful memories.

  6. If you Facebook this, we could share and spread the word. Bonne chance!

  7. What a great shame, but a anyone of us who lives in an old house knows they need constant care and attention and long winters without do take their toll. I am sure someone will love it dearly and enjoy every living part of the house.

  8. The farmhouse is stunning! Like others have said, if I won the lottery I’d be there in a heartbeat 🙂 Can’t wait to see more of the apartment in Cassis!

  9. oh, what a dreamy place that farm is…no wonder Yann has it embedded within his being..so hard to release such a place..
    A wonderful opportunity for someone.

  10. Privacy to me is the greatest luxury of all. If I were you I would sell both apartments and your currant house to live in this farmhouse, not a neighbor in sight and that large wonderful kitchen. Ahhhhh

I’m sure the perfect buyers will come forward soon and that they will love it for many decades ahead.
Amazing to know such places exist!

  12. Ohh la la… !talk about a wonderful dream…..

  13. What a difficult decision that must have been!
