What to do When it is Raining at the Brocante

Brocante what to do

What to do when it rains on your parade, or in my case: brocante day? If you are a reasonable person you find a brocante that is inside, if you are like me that idea comes after a grump session with disappointment.

Isle sur la Sorgue brocante and antique market is every weekend, and most of it is indoors. But I did not feel like going there this weekend, because Chelsea was home. As she went for a run, I thought I would "run" to the local brocante market.

The last Sunday of every month there is an antique market in Aubagne, lucky this rainy day was on the last Sunday of the month.

Brocante, French Brocante,

These two French olive pots greeted me.

The one in the back with a touch of green is older.

Brocante, French Brocante,

A wooden box full of old French pottery.

Brocante, French Brocante,

A pair of miniature chairs that were used to hold a pocket watch. See the little latch on top of the back of the chair?

Brocante, French Brocante,

Hand painted platters. A pottery, faience, dishes… cupboard type of brocante day.

Brocante, French Brocante,

Stack of linens with gigantic monograms, and a pair of armchairs.

Paintings in perfect condition, and or perfectly restored in perfect frames.

Just too perfect for my taste.

My friend Melanie who lives in Bangkok, sister Clarice does upholstery on old furniture. Also she is an antique dealer, and sets up in Aubagne.

French Brocante, old toy boxes

These darling old toy box games were on her stand as well.

While I was taking this photo, I noticed a white confit pot in the reflection of the trumeau.

As I was checking the confit pot to see if it was broken, chipped, cracked…

I saw a 1700s faience platter, but before I could utter a word someone grabbed it, asked the price and bought it.

Lucky guy!

And Mr. Stuffed Animal Admirer aks French Husband found this 19th century mustard pot.

I tell you he is way into it these days.

French brocante

This little colouring box had my name all over it, and it literally cried, "Take me home."

The dealer asked if I wanted the contents in side the colouring box. I said no. Then he said, "Do you collect old boxes?" When I confirmed that I did, he told me he did too, and if I wanted he would show me his other boxes…"

Lovely beautiful rainy day, thank you!!

My latest discoveries from the brocante will be listed tomorrow here:

  1. I’m losing it over that older olive pot – *because* of the green! Mercy. LOVE LOVE LOVE

  2. I am confused: which one did you go to: Aubange?

  3. Did you fit the olive pots in your cute car????
Easier than the plane I would want to put them on!!!

  4. Those hand painted platters – love!

  5. Oh the pottery would have grabbed me. Thinking the same thing as another comment. How would it fit in the plane?

You lucked out then, and close and easy to get to also.
I never know what the going rate is for various things that catch my eye at a brocante, though: for example, what’s going rate for the olive pots (are they as huge as I’m thinking they are?) and for smaller pottery like in the next picture? How do I find out what reasonable prices are for some next trip?
Tell Clarice I adore her upholstery job there — the beautiful calm simplicity of the quiet colored fabric, punctuated charmingly by the whimsy of the bright little buttons and trim (not exactly matching but clearly from the same fabric.) Right up my alley. Made me smile.
Thanks for taking us with you!

And, for curiosity, how much did the platter get snatched up for? I just have no clue what the price ranges would be.
