Poisson d’Avril – April Fools’ Day

April's Fool in France

On April 1st the French give each other chocolate fish called: "Friture." The tradition has it that on the 1st of April children try to stick a homemade paper fish onto people’s backs without the person knowing it, then run away yelling, ‘Poisson d’Avril’, which is like saying, "April Fools'!". The tagged person is meant to give the trickster fritures, small chocolate fish.

Since Easter is usually around April 1st, the chocolate fish "fritures" are also given at Easter as well.

Back in the day, or I should say in the year 1900s give or take another thirty or so, the French mailed Poisson d'Avril cards to one another.

French April's Fool

When French Husband first told me about this April's Fool fish thing it was back in 1987.

I had come to France to meet his family. During this time, which happen to be around the first of April he told me that April's Fool was about tricking someone by pinning or tapping a paper fish on someone's back.

A few days later on April first. I had made two small red fish. French Husband and my Belle Mere (Mother in Law) were going to a meeting. Before they left I tapped one fish on French Husband's back and another on my Belle Mere's back without them being aware.

I was tickled beyond belief at how "French" I felt as they walked out the door to their meeting.

When they came back I asked if anyone had noticed the fish tapped to their backs?

"What fish they asked?"

Their eyes widen as it registered what I was talking about, they quickly looked at each other's backs. I told them I had taped the fish to their backs before they left for their meeting.

1st of April in France

Neither of them were very amused.

In fact they looked at me like I was some sort of alien fish. I could feel myself sinking, going down stream. I had made a faux pas on the day were faux pas are expected. Duh.

French Husband questioned, "You put a fish on our backs as we went to an important meeting with our lawyer?"

"Uh huh. I did. But in my defense I didn't know the meeting was important."

Needless to say they didn't buy me any fritures…chocolates.

I felt such a fool.

WHY fish for April's fool

After dinner they started to see they humor in it. Maybe the few glasses of wine helped.

Then as most jokes later are retold and told again they found it hilarious.

And eventually congratulated me on such a comic pull.

But still no fritures.

Poisson d'avri

I have never fished anyone again.

Nor have I bought those fritures.

Though the old French "Poisson d'Avril" cards, oh yeah I have plenty of them.

Fishing for my april fool

What is it all about this Aprils Fools Day thing anyway?

Have you ever played a prank on the first of April? If so tell me about it in the comment section, and or if you have had a prank pulled on you.

  3. I love this story because of the child like innocence and the spirit you showed- I do not mean spirited in a negative way again the child like joy you showed at the poisson d’avril celebration-I do not play jokes or have never had one played on me that I am aware of I do not get the april fool’s thing -never did-I am very gullible so I am sure there have been laughs at my expense but OH WELL I am not aware of it so no harm I guess-I ADORE THE POISSON D”AVRIL CARDS SO MUCH-for the juxtaposition of elements presented w woman surrounded by fish who is not a fish monger the children holding those fish I just find it funny- maybe the lesson is don’t forget to laugh at one’s self and life isn’t meant to be taken so seriously-I wish someone would have sent me a POISSON D’AVRIL card…no such luck maybe next year-I am always buying them from ebay LOVE THEM!!!

My husband once had small chickens he kept in a fenced area at night. He had fenced the top and every possible opening to make sure other animals couldn’t sneak in and get his chickens. Each morning he would go to check for eggs. They were tiny, but he was always cheerful bragged about what his chickens had laid. So I drove the countryside to find an ostrich egg, and I did. I placed it in the nest and when he went out on April Fool’s morning you can only imagine the look on his face as he knew there was no way another animal was able to get in to lay the egg.

Well. I was kind of bad. I put ketchup on myself and ran down the stairs after I screamed. It was early in the morning before everyone was up. Grampie, Mom and Dad all came out onto the landing above the stairs
Mom was so upset saving oh my God what has happened. I think she’s dead Art. Well Mom came down crying and when she got close enough I sat up and cried April fools
Well as you can imagine my poor mother was so happy to know I was all right but so upset with me to think I did that
Later that morning the hospital called my Dad to say his foreman had had a stroke. Dad believing it was a joke said yea ,yea sure. Well as time went on he began to worry and called his business to see if Hal was there. Well no he hadn’t shown up for work. He called the hospital and yes Hal was there an indeed he had a stroke He apologized for his earlier response and explained why he had reacted this way
Well I never did this again as I was in the dog house for awhile but I always remember this April 1st

  6. What a funny story. I love it! No, I have never been good at conjuring up a good prank.

  7. Every year my husband pulled an April Fools joke on me and yet…I NEVER saw it coming.
One April 1st. he woke me up as he was rushing off to work. He leaned over me very seriously and said, Honey, I’ve found someone else…my eyes got really big and just as I was ready to start crying, he laughingly said, “Aprils Fools Day! I was mad for about a day:)

  8. The children always come home from school on 1st April, saying how many fish had been stuck on their backs and how many they had stuck on other people. Last year our French neighbour’s played the very best April Fools joke on us. They slipped two tiny quail eggs into one of our nesting boxes in the chicken coup without us knowing. For weeks we pondered how two tiny eggs had arrived in our hen house, we did not realise they were quails eggs for ages, they really fooled us, proving that the French do have an incredible sense of humour!

  9. i like this story-funny and sweet!

  10. Good for you! What a funny reaction they had. Glad they finally saw the humor in it.
When I taught first grade I had my students make a fried egg out of clay. We fired them and glazed them. They looked pretty realistic. I taught them how to set a place setting and told them to tell their mother they had made breakfast for them on April 1, using the egg. I still do it for my husband every year, though the surprise element is long gone. I even do it to my cats, who are never particularly amused.

  11. another sweet story!

No April Fool jokes from me for anyone sadly, I don’t tend to do that sort of thing, though I do enjoy hearing and seeing good ones and your story above is wonderful, made me laugh out loud….well done and shame on FH and Mother-in-law for not giving you a belated choc fish for your cleverness. Happy April to all…..
