Anyone who knows me, knows that I am afraid of dogs. Though through the many years of my life my fear has lessened dramatically by the help of a dog named Babette.
Babette is Lisa's adorable friend who is a King something or other. Babette's eyes are soulful, sweet and full of longing. From the first time I saw Babette, six years ago, I have thought that if ever I had a dog it would be one like Babette.
Today at breakfast Babette sat by me. Didn't move just sat by my side. Years ago I could not go into someone's house if they had a dog. I could not get out of the car is a dog was in the yard. I was that afraid.
Silly but true.
Over the years my fear has lessened, it has been a slow process, with the help of many gentle furry creatures, especially due to Babette. Usually I give myself a pep talk when I see a dog, "You can do this, just don't look at them, you do not have to touch them…"
But today was different.
Lisa asked if she could take a photo of me with Babette, and I agreed so I could remind myself how much I have grown to accept that dogs are not killers.
I held out my hand to Babette. At first I was very scared even though Babette just looked at me, and did not move. So I thought, "Wow look I can put my hand out and it isn't getting bit off!"
And when I finally relaxed and felt like I had taken a giant step for me-kind, Babette kissed me.
It was a wet kiss and freaked me out, though from the photo I can see I did not move my hand, yeah me, and Babette is looking at me kindly with gentle consideration for my silliness. The next time I see her I am going to push the limits and hold her.
Thank you Lisa for the photos.
