Where to go in Provence: Martigues

Provence has many pockets of charm, framed by the mediterranean, the rugged interior inland, hilltop villages, and a mighty Mistral that at times is like a paint brush sweeping strokes of blue. I guess I should mark places down for you, not in order of favorites, just as I see them when I happen to visit. So I will, Martigues will be the starter as we went there today.

We went out for a drive to Martigues, a miniature Provencal Venice. Lunch we decided had to be by the water… Le Miroir.

Various shades of happiness, pastel boats and shutters to match.

A brocante shop two doors down, across the street Sainte-Madeleine de Martigues Church (1680).

A picture perfect spot for romantic lunch.

If I did not have Cassis I would be tempted.

Martigues is forty minutes from Marseille, or a hop skip and a jump for the airport.

Take a ride on the lovely train Bleu.

I hid behind the fountain and caught Yann walking by.

I love his red pants.

what a grand place…a perfect stage setting for a romantic meal with Yann. Following the links you provided was a magical journey for me this morning. Thanks for another beautiful look at a small city in Provence.

  7. When I saw the first picture, before I read any of the text, I was struck at how much it looks like Murano! It really, really looks just like Murano!
So beautiful, and I have never heard of it before… love these sorts of surprises!

  8. On our list! And we must get some red pants for Kirk 😉

  9. What a beautiful spot. I’ve not been there but when I return to France, I think it will be a must-see!

  10. Will you two next be looking for a house in Martigues in need of rehabbing? I’d have a tough time deciding whether I’d want to stay there or in Cassis 🙂
