The Angel Above

My Grandmother Frances came to America from the Azores. Her trunk was filled with simple necessities: A linen towel, a few chemises, a hairbrush, a dress in cotton for Spring, and another in wool, probably an apron, certainly a rosary, and a porcelain angel holy water font.

What a lovely story. You are a fortunate women to have been so cared for and loved. You have continued the legacy through your own actions and on two continents as well…

  2. That is a lovely memory!

“In this world, there is a kind of painful progress. Longing for what we’ve left behind, and dreaming ahead.”

If you’ve never seen the rabbis speech from the same program, I highly recommend it:

    Yep that’s Meryl Streep, lol.

  5. You started the conversation that we need prayer. I agree we need prayer. Prayers for peace, prayers for those whose hearts have hardened. We should not underestimate the power of prayer!

  6. Beautiful, how lucky you are to have such fantastic memories. My husband worked in the Azores for several years during the summer months, I would go and visit for as long as I could each time. I will never forget the hedges made of hydrangeas, snaking around huge fields, unlike anything I have ever seen, beautiful Islands.

  7. With or without the holy water from an angel, the prayers help, maybe those of us who pray them, if not the ones who are prayed for.

  8. Lovely, Corey. And it’s a poem. Arrange the lines and you’ll see. . .

  12. I can see the little girl’s tiny hand reaching up to touch the cool water like a scene in a movie. I would love it if you would post a photo of this special heirloom.
