The House Next Door

The house next door is shaping up, most likely it will be completed in the next three weeks. Rene is feeling better, his ribs were badly bruised but not broken, whew.

The walls are plastered, and have a beautiful finish on them. The old ceiling will be left as is.

When Rene took off the years of wallpaper he found traces of old paint. We decided to keep two parts of the wall "as is" and simply frame it. I call it "Modern Monet".

The kitchen will be exact opposite of the modern Monet.

I have been looking at tiles. The counter will be polished tinted cement, the back splash will be hand crafted cement tiles… here are a few samples

Corey, I don’t know how you’re going to choose tiles as they’re all wonderful in their own way. Loving the framed modern Monet look. What’s happening with your old kitchen/dining are you knocking thought next door to your present abode?

Each step of both remodels is so exciting to watch.

  3. All of the tiles are beautiful, it would be difficult to decode which ones to purchase.

  4. What an amazing selection of tiles – you are really spoilt for choice in France. It’s looking good!

Fabulous selection, I always think the stage you are at now is the fun part, lots of decisions but you can see results almost instantly. Have a great Sunday

I love tiles. Yesterday I had to stop by the the Hotel de Police (to aks about delivery rules) and started raving about their gorgeous tile floor. Crazy lady, they must have thought.
It seems counterintuitive, but the more tiles it takes to complete a motif, the airier it feels.

  7. Those tiles are gorgeous! I think that small space is just asking for a pop of pattern and drama! 😀

Dizzying array to choose from. How do you pick just one?

  9. Oh!, those tiles!!

  10. Incredible choices! What fun!

can’t wait to see the finished house! Sorry if I have missed this, but what are you intending to do with this house once it is done? Are you using it to expand your current home, selling it or renting it out?

  14. Hi Corey – somehow I missed the post about Rene’s injury so went backwards and read it today. Sounds very painful, please wish him a speedy recovery. And poor little Babette and pet-mom Lisa – my heart goes out to them. Rene recovers, baby bird starts its life, Babette maybe ending hers – sorrow and happiness and difficulties and joy. And you guys are creating something beautiful – sigh – life holds a lot doesn’t it?

  15. Iam, for a long time already, obsessed with those gorgeous cement tiles. And I have a funny story that happened today when we were in Paris. There is this old passage with many wonderful and weird cafés & bars and restos, and one was called Odéon which we visited 2 yrs ago but I had no camera with me. Today I went in and a lovely young waiter asked me what he could do for me… I said I had come to take photos of their wonderful, worn, walked-down mosaic floors because they were a bit like ours in our house – and he said: well, last year we re-did the whole place, I AM REALLY SORRY! So was I – an I’m returning gratefully to my worn down, old, dirty, broken but so lovely, colourful mini-tiles….. Whatever you’re going to choose it will be the right choice – they are all heavenly (but sadly also terribly expensive!).
Sorry for not commenting more often – have my own projects. Happy Sunday Evening to you.

Hi Leigh, This is a separate house next to ours. We are not breaking through any walls. The two houses will be independent.

  19. Tongue in Cheek

    I agree I cannot decide!!

Provence has such a wide wonderful selection of materials! It is surreal!

  21. RE “traces of old paint”: Please get them tested to see if they’re leaded paint, and thus need to be removed. Presumably, like in the U.S., it’s been outlawed in France because of its toxicity.

  22. Tongue in Cheek

Yes, after the tear down the sight becomes clearer. I love every stage!

  23. Tongue in Cheek

lol, I can see you in the police station and the looks they must have given you as you admired their tiles.

  24. Tongue in Cheek

I hope I dare do that!!

  33. We just finished renovating my mil flat for our daughter, and even if it has a more modern look, I can understand so well all the journey of transformation. Take a look at my blog to see it all, if you get time.
