what it is, What it is??

Out of all the years that I have been doing these French Antique Guessing Games this is the first one that has not revealed an answer, and it doesn't surprise me. When I saw this thing at the brocante, I was with Andrea, Jan, Sarah and Andrea's Mom… none of us knew, and even when we were told we were all a bit baffled by it.

It is for a servant to carry a hot beverage to their charge. Let's say right before bed you would like to have a cup of tea. So you ring the servant's bell and soon there after here comes your tea, with the handle facing you.

Pretty clever don't you think.

Yann was my servant for the demo.

There were so many clever creative responses, that I have decided to select

"It is a toilet bowl brush holder!"

Please send me your address so I can send you a toilet brush holder.
No just teasing! I will send you something sweet and lovely,
I will send you this unusual piece.

A servant's tray of sorts.

I think there must have been a matching cup, but unfortunately the cup is missing, I had a cup so used it in the photos.

Thank you for the many many comments, and emails. I really appreciate your guesses. Until next time!

  1. What! Well! I must have one!

  2. Well now that I see it, I guess it makes sense. I never would have guessed that! 😉

  3. Hehehe! So clever! Now if I only had a servant to bring me hot cocoa on cold nights.
BTW – that pink cup is beyond!
Thanks for the fun, I always enjoy these guessing games!

  4. I love it! That is so perfect. Now I want one.

  5. I’ll take a servant and skip the tea. Clever.

  6. I was sure that my superior Internet sleuthing skills and Boolean logic would result in triumph. Ha. I searched in English. I searched in French. I searched in vain.
The true use of the cup reminds me of the golden years when my little one was little, and asked, after a fairy tale involving, as they do, put-upon servants and fabulous princesses and princes, “Mama, why don’t WE have servants?”

  7. That is lovely!!! So fun to see it and dream of Downton Abbey days with bits like that!!!

  8. OH… Thank You Corey! I will enjoy it and think of you. I’ve just e-mailed my address to you.

Well, I’ll bet Queen Victoria had one.
I just didn’t know what she used it for.
Is that one of the pretty pink tea cups
you served to those “hunky builders”
    some time back?

  10. Good Grief!!!

How very fascinating. Glad I backtracked to see the answer to the puzzle.
How very fortunate that the seller actually knew what it was. (or was he just making up something?) No, it seems quite reasonable.
I like the pink plain cup in contrast to the fancy blue design actually.
