With family, friends and the contractors coming and going every night I have become the cook again. It reminds me of a big family and the person at the helm having to think about menus from sun up to sun down: What to make, what is left, what to buy, buy it, carry it home, plan it, prepare it, set the table, burn your arm on the over door…

Constant food. I think I should just write the menus.

Or the grocery list as blog posts.

Tonight was a small dinner party… French Husband's nephew who is a chef in Paris (no pressure there!) and who today rode a bike to and from Cassis (about 65K) and took some sun. My Belle Mere and French Husband.

If you ask two out of the three people gathered around the dinner table tonight, "What did you have for  dinner?", only the chef would know.

What did you have for dinner last night?

  1. Of course, we want to know what you’ve been cooking for these typical soirees after nine!

  2. well–chicken breast re-heated in a red sauce melted mozzarella cheese on top creamy mash potatoes and string beans-bread for me only-love bread-dessert was moose track ice crème -I did not have that-wanted it but didn’t!

  3. We’ve been having lots of seasonal organically-grown vegetables from our own garden lately: sweet corn, Swiss chard, Romano and Chinese green beans, zucchini (courgettes to you), and fresh peaches and cantaloupe from the farmers’ market.
We eat at a much earlier hour, however, in order to try to avoid acid reflux.

  4. It wa leftover ravioli with evil, bssil and part, along with some radishes and lettuce. Today was shopping day.

I was exhausted after a busy day and had a vegetarian pizza, calamari and a piece of cheesecake delivered. Tonight I made a big pot of cioppino with wild shrimp and garlic toasted Italian bread. Yum!

  6. How could I forget our several varieties of tomatoes and peppers — oops!

Quick question, if you have dinner after 9pm, what time do you retire for the night? What time do you (the average French person who has a job) get up in the morning? Do they have a siesta type rest period during the afternoon?

  8. A chef in Paris? Well that makes for difficult scrutiny.
Just keep his glass constantly full of wine or pastis. 😉

  9. My daughter Emma made fish tacos and tortilla soup for dinner tonight. Everything was delicious. We are taking her back to Chicago tomorrow where she will start her junior year of college in a week. I don’t know what is more surprising- the fact she has turned into an excellent cook or that my baby is that old!

  10. Dim sum frin Hong Kong Lounge II in San Francisco.
Pan fried noodles w chicken, chives, and enoki mushroom.
    Vegetable and shrimp dumplings.
Sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaf
Chicken feet in a black bean jalepeno sauce
    Yum yum!

  11. Taste of France

Côte à l’os on the grill, salad with feta, ratatouille niçoise…..eaten outside. Family is visiting. Today will be magret de canard. Vegetable to be decided by what’s good at the market in a couple of hours. Probably tomatoes.
Wild blackberries and figs for dessert.

  12. Our French Oasis

Our own Charentais melons followed by Whole mackerel grilled on the BBQ, thin slices of aubergines, fresh from our garden, drizzled in olive oil and salt, also on the grill. Fresh tomatoes, cucumber and lettuce from the garden. We are always 7 and with friends staying or friends of ours or the children’s frequently joining us, more often than not we are 10 or 12 every night. I get used to permanently catering for large numbers!

  13. Julia – Vintage with Laces

I made a potato-cauliflower casserole with roasted onions and bechamel sauce au gratin.

Pork carnitas with tomatillo sauce with grilled squash and pickled beets–hmmm, it was at a delightful restaurant in Austin. Love your family stories.

Gyros, Greek salad and lemon rice. Don’t you love Greek salad, with all the tomatoes , cucumbers, green pepper, red onion, kalmata olives and feta with vinegar and oil and fresh herbs? Yum

With a table full of family, we enjoyed a summery Minty Mango Chicken salad – perhaps we’ll serve it to you next time we’re in town!

  17. And once again. Your Belle Mere rocking an outfit I’d feel to old to wear!
Lots of fresh tomatoes from the garden!

  18. Last night was the Fireman’s Parade that kicks off a local county fair, so dinner was beer and hot dogs!

  19. Braised chicken with olives and garlic in a light butter and white wine sauce topped with fresh thyme and arugula. Gratin of potatoes. Raspberries tosses in sugar and vanilla, crème anglaise, and tuiles. Fresh tomatoes and basil.
    What have you served recently.

  20. Franca Bollo

Vodka tonic but since I was out of tonic it was just vodka. So, I guess a really dry vodka martini.
