A Great Fantastic Change in my Life

Last July one lovely warm morning my life changed. The table was set: Jams, yogurts, croissants, brioche, fresh fruit, and with a teapot in hand I asked my guests, "What would you prefer coffee or tea from Comptoir Anglais des Thés?"

But before I go into the story that changed my life, I must fill you in about my tea obsession with Mariage Freres . The shop alone is enchanting enough to make anyone become a tea consumer, let alone the charming black containers with pale yellow labelling and the massive varieties of teas they offer. Fortunate was I when Mariage Freres (located in Paris in the Marais) teas were sold in Marseille: Black Orchard, Wedding Imperial, Trois Noix, Marco Polo, Lapsang Souchong… were some of my favorites, my kitchen drawer had several varieties at all times, especially since coffee never tasted good to me. Mariage Freres' tea was my preferred hot drink. Until the day I was introduced to Comptoir Anglais des Thés (in Aix en Provence) Gentlemen tea with that first sip I was under its spell. Besotted with Gentlemen a mixture of almond and caramel.

Tea-time

As I held up the teapot and offered tea that famous morning, Sonia (Natacha's youngest sister) replied, "Neither for me as I am allergic to caffeine." Curiously, I asked her what happened to her when she had caffeine. Her response was, "Migraines." Dumbfounded I uttered, "I have migraines too." Sonia said, "No, I have serious migraines, not just headaches, you know everyone says they have migraines, when really they just have headaches." I shook my head in agreement then said, "Trust me I have serious migraines and have had since I was a teenager. I probably have 10 to 15 migraines a month. And if it weren't for prescribed migraine medication I would be, as I use to be, in bed or throwing up or both for days. Basically in pain most of the time."

Then I looked at that loved teapot, that I was still holding in midair, with new eyes.
From that moment on I haven't had a sip of tea, nor a sip or bite of chocolate either. And poof within that week until this present day I haven't had a migraine.
Caffeine caused my migraines.
Not stress, or lack of sleep, or hormones, or gluten, or sugar, nor wine.
French Husband boldly suggested while we were in Sicily and he was drinking cup after cup of the most beautifully hot chocolate, that I taste some,
"Why not have a cup and see if you get a migraine."
I replied,
"Why do I not fall on a knife and see if it hurts."

Teacup, corey amaro,

To this day I cannot believe that I never thought that maybe caffeine was my thorn. But how happy I am the Natacha and Sonia came to visit me that lovely summer morning.
Do you know how wonderful it feels to wake up and not have a migraine? I was afraid to mention it before, in case I jinxed it somehow.

What is something that has changed your life?

Migraines are mysterious monsters. A friend suffered from them and one day decided to try forgoing bread. This was years before the gluten-free craze. In fact, he didn’t go gluten-free; he just stopped eating industrial bread from the supermarket. And his migraines stopped. He found the bread a year later in a cupboard, still looking as fresh as ever.
You are lucky that you found your trigger!

  2. I am glad for your recovery from migraines. I imagine you have found lovely green or herbal tea.
I discovered Mariage Freres tea about 5 years ago during a visit to Paris. I love Marco Polo and French Breakfast. But my first love is espresso.
    Thankfully, it doesn’t cause headaches!
All the best in the new year!

  3. I would be so sad to not be able to drink tea and eat chocolate. My husband gets dizzy spells from drinking caffeine. Right now I have two Mariage Freres teas in my stash. I love that place.

  4. What about decaffeinated tea and/or coffee? I can’t have too much caffeine or I get a migraine or two, but decaffeinated I can drink. Not trying to stir up the teapot, but just wondering, Corey.?.?.?.?.?

I have been thinking of you while drinking the heavenly “Gentleman’s Tea!” I need to go back for more! How is the herbal version they gave you? I shared your story about caffeine with others I know with migraines. They are so debilitating I am happy you are free of them!

  6. Stopped drinking alcohol. Later stopped eating meat/fish/shellfish.

Thank you for my love & addiction for Mariage Freres tea! Luckily you can purchase the Marco Polo in the tin at Dean & Deluca in the states. There is no comparison to this cup of tea! Luckily, you told us the location of Mariage Freres in Paris and we visited while there the first time. That was a treat in itself!
As far as migraines…I was advised by an English doctor in a New Orleans’ emergency room to take my medication with caffeine. Mine are cause by barometric pressure and anytime we have major weather changes, these come along with it. Anyone that has suffered will do anything it takes to avoid having one, whatever it takes. Happy New Year Sweet Friends! D&T

I get a HEADACHE if I have more than two cups!

Completely incredible, Corey! But what, may I ask then, do you drink for soothing comfort and pleasure??

Herb tea is okay, green tea has caffeine:

I thought it would be harder too, but the idea of having pain makes it very easy to say no.

Loved the pun. But even a little causes a migraine so no I do not drink or eat anything with caffeine: http://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/in-depth/caffeine/art-20049372

Hi Teresa, I am sorry to hear about your migraines. As it stands there isn’t much you can do about pressure you cannot control. I am glad you liked Mariage Freres shop, it is a jewel isn’t it. Happy New Year xxx
