An Elephant and a Donkey

An elephant and a donkey

An elephant and a donkey (1900s) that I found at the brocante, part of the French "creche" = a nativity set.

 Aren't they adorable?

Oh symbolism:

"An artistic and poetic movement or style using symbolic images and indirect suggestion to express mystical ideas, emotions, and states of mind." Via the Dictionary.

Will they, or do they, ever get along? Both from another world of  opinion. Who stands in between the two, a snake, a rabbit, a rat, a saint?

Where did the symbol of the elephant and the donkey come from?

Did they ever see eye to eye?

Have they ever disagreed more?

They want the same thing, don't they? Is it that they follow different paths to reach the same point? I use to believe that, or at least hoped that were true, that we sought love, peace, courage, understanding and acceptance, and much more. Maybe I was naive, or a snowflake as I have heard.

How hard it is for me to accept that, "love is love", is not love to some.

And so they stand,

Uncomfortable,

on the same ground and sing,

"…This land is your land, this land is my land…"

All this because two nativity pieces, an elephant and a donkey, were found at a brocante. I plan on putting them on my online shop, I cannot separate the two because they do belong together.

  1. YES THEY DO…belong together-I long for a time when the lion will lay beside the lamb in perfect peace…and I adore these two!

  2. I am hoping that the snake the stands between them can be removed and that the elephant and the donkey can then heal.

  3. Those santons are adorable.
That roasted eggplant, with baked tomatoes, pine nuts, pesto and parmigiano you posted yesterday sure looked good.

Despite the Naïve style, they are very expressive.

Unfortunately, they will never get along here in the U.S.

These guys spoke to me so I had to buy them. I have been so upset over politics lately and have lost some faith in my fellow man so I plan to put these on the mantle of my home and look at them to remind me that we can get along and that the shortest distance between two people is a smile, a joke, a kindness. Thanks so much for posting them!

  8. Brilliant post today Corey….I would have bought them, but got there too late.

great post today, thank you Corey, I would love to share this, why don’t you post this on FB?

  10. I think it’s much greater than two parties not agreeing..it’s extremism and it’s scary! And happening in other countries & upcoming elections. Search for the facts & truth & read the investigative reporting & reputable newspapers..there is something much more sinister happening & I pray for the evidence soon before the crazies in the White House destroy our long & hard fought for democracy & institutions.

  11. Amen. Please not here!!

  12. SOOOooooo sad I missed this!
