As the sky darkens over the mountains where we live, I know we are in for a fast and furious downpour. These are some of the photos as we drove home.

As it doesn't rain much in Provence compared to the rest of France, when it does rain, the landscape comes alive as the dust is washed away.

Chelsea was driving, which allowed me to take photos.

Flash flood, water poured from the olive groves onto the dirt paths and then to the main road. T affect crawled.

When French Husband used to ride his motorcycle to work thirty minutes away from home, I used to call him if there was a downpour in our town (Often, if it rains in our village, it doesn't mean it is raining in Marseille.) so he could be aware of those pools of water created by the storm.

  1. We have the same thing here today. It was raining, so I opened the shutters on the east. Then the sun came out, so I closed them and hung up laundry outside. Then another shower, so I opened the shutters and grabbed the laundry. Now it’s sunny again. I just had time to run, through a vista similar to your last photo, between showers. I crossed a river that flooded a few months ago; now it’s dry. It gets very dry here in Languedoc, too, and any rain is always welcomed.

The third pic from the bottom reminds me of the painting in the (my, ahem;) apartment. Love the pic of Chelsea in the rear view mirror.

Stormy skies make for dramatic pictures. So much water on the road.

It is raining here in AZ, USA. Much needed moisture and the temps are way down. Perfect! Enjoying the moment!

Fine photographs of high drama!! As of yesterday, we have not had any measurable rain in Portland for the last 38 days. I doubt we’ll get any soon, as this city, known to non-residents as a rainy place, usually in fact has no rain all summer. Thank you for sharing your rainy day and stormy skies with us, Leslie

These photos are so evocative of Provence and bring a warmness to my heart. They are paintings for the soul.

  7. These are truly lovely.

Congrats on the rain. I liked that ominously dark grey on light grey photo, second from top.
And just two days ago, a friend who lives in the Hill Country of Texas (the part in the middle that actually looks like Provence to me, minus the very old villages) wrote this: “HUGE frog-strangler rain surprise, with folks pulled over and sheets of water crossing the road around about Spicewood, hope we got some of it, home is only 15 minutes away now, and in TX you can never tell!”

Meanwhile, here in western Washington state, “where it rains all the time” according to folks who don’t live here, we’re up for a record number of days without rain. And 75-79 deg F temps most days. Aside from fir trees that are about to get stressed from lack of water, it’s an amazingly lovely summer here.
