Provencal Garden Party

Because Chelsea and Sacha were home, Because the summer evenings in Provence are so mild and delicious, because Philippe makes paella, because the City Hall lets the community use their hall tables and benches (delivers them too), and because I love throwing a party and getting stressed by French Husband's casual attitude like taking a nap at 4:30 when there was plenty to do… we had a garden party.

Thankfully the fabric store was having a sale, I bought extra wide fabric in a mossy green/brown to convert into table clothes. The saleslady asked me if I wanted a little extra for a hem? I told her I was eyeballing the measurements, and a hem, not necessary. I think she thought I was a fly by night winger. Yeah that would be me. The clothes worked out perfectly.

Years ago at the brocante I found a stack of about sixty plates for 15 Euros, I have used them for every party I have ever had. I wrapped the zinnia plants I bought at the garden shop, in old linen tea towels.

We have one round table that seats eight to ten people so we used that one too.

Our courtyard is big enough to entertain, but small enough that we are not a prisoner to it.

Philippe gave us a list of ingredients, plus kitchen supplies we had to have on hand. He has the cooking equipment, and his famous polka dotted apron.

The paella he made for us was fish.

The glass water dispenser I found at the brocante after I saw one that my mother had. I added mint and whole lemons to it. My cousin, The Elegant Vegan, gave me a great tip: She adds the whole lemon instead of slices as the flavor sips out, but the water does not become cloudy.

Elegant indeed.

Philippe sautes the onions and peppers first, then cooks the rice with broth, then adds the fish…

For the aperitif I served homemade hummus (chickpeas, garlic, lemon, olive oil, water, mint, tahini and curry paste) I added the breadsticks, like a porcupine to make it easier to serve.

Doesn't Chelsea look like a ray of sunshine next to Mr. Espresso? Mr. Espresso's father is in the background.

Easy Elegance, thy name is Corey

  2. What a fun party! How is Mr. E’s father doing? Wasn’t he in a bad accident a few years ago?

    As if I was there…

As I was scrolling down through photos and commentary, I came to the photo of Chelsea leaning on Mr E’s shoulder, and thought to myself, “she looks so sunny in that yellow and next to him!”
Lo and behond, the next words I read are:
“Doesn’t Chelsea look like a ray of sunshine next to Mr. Espresso?”
    Ha!
Remind us about Mr Espresso’s father — I too remember some trauma involving him a ways back, and am happy to see him partying. This also says that Chelsea and Mr E have been an item for quite a while, I think.
And: SIXTY PLATES FOR 15 EUROS!!!!!What a deal. The main trick then is where to store them all.
Loved seeing the pics on facebook and now getting to read more about them. This is the sort of charm-with-ease garden party that most of us just dream about.

  8. Thank you for such a lovely evening on Saturday night, Corey and Yann. It was just magical! So good to finally meet Chelsea and Mr. Espresso and see Sacha again.
    We love summer in Provence!

  9. I love hosting people for meals and especially desserts around our big dining room table but I do not enjoy the cleaning prior to the arrival!

It’s all good, including the polka dot apron. What a lovely evening with friends and family, and the Paella looks amazing!

So….when Charland and I are next door, please can there be a paella party. I will help by wrapping a wonderful potted plant in a tea towel. I will even buy the tea towel! I love the look of Philippe’s cooking and his apron .

  13. That looked like so much fun, beautiful setting and Chelsea looks gorgeous. Yet another perfect summer evening, I am sure. x

Lovely…and inspiring!! Welcome back to France, Chelsea!

  15. And it looks like an exceptional garden party. Beautiful!

  16. Sharon CS

Everything looked amazing – just beautiful!

  17. How lovely and perfect. I, too, would love an update on Mr. Espresso’s father. It warms my heart to see him there partying with all. I hope he knows how we all prayed for him after his accident. And I have a very similar apron to Phillipe – it is my Flamenco apron as mine has ruffles as well. When I wear it I feel the need for castanets. 😝😝😜😜

  18. Beautiful!

I love your courtyard! So perfect for a garden party. Thanks for the tips (whole lemons, and breadsticks in the humus). I will definitely use them. So fun to see your family, your life! You are a treasure!

  20. Beautiful. Glad to see Phillip still wears the red + black polka dot apron.

  21. Sigh…and sigh…..repeat…..

  24. Indeed a welcome home party of sorts

  25. Hi Rebecca, Yes Mr. E’s father was hit by a car that ran a red light. He lost his leg from the knee down. He is doing much better, one can not tell as he is very sportive and at ease.
Thank you for your thoughtfulness xx

  26. LOL, oh yeah that is always so much fun!

  27. I wrote above in the comments about Mr. E’s dad. And YES when you com back… SOON????

  28. Oh that would be fun! I would so enjoy that!! Fingers crossed xxx

  29. Thank you Susie and all of you for your prayers and cards at the time of his accident. Yes, he is doing better and has regained his strength and activities. He is very grateful xxx
