What I Saw at the Market in Cassis

IMG_1953

There are so many people in Cassis now that I feel like I am on holiday when I walk outside. Of course, Cassis always feels like a holiday, but these days, even more so. We thought our apartment might be bombarded with sound, but it wasn't. As there are no cars on the port, that makes a massive difference. Also, the noise we hear is more like when you are on the beach and the people around you are talking, but the sea's waves and magnitude muffle it. It is agreeable, friendly, and, like I said, it feels like a holiday whenever we are here.

I admired this woman's skirt. She wore it as a cover-up for her swimsuit.

The open market is brimming with summer's feast.

The melons are like none other.

Goat cheese from Manosque, about an hour from Cassis, up by the lavender fields.

If I did not have to wear prescription glasses, I would have bought these! Darling!

Local potter.

Brilliant colors.

They have opened a shop in town.

As much as I love these, I cannot wear them. My foot is like a sloppy joe inside of them.

But they are cute.

They are grown nearby.

Local farmer.

My favorite vegetable/fruit market stand, where 90 percent is grown on her farm.

The quality is superb.

She picks the best and sets it aside for her faithful clients; thankfully, I scored today (after four months of buying from her) as one of her favorites.

Am I becoming Cassisdian?

  1. Corey,
I am so happy for you! I can’t imagine waking up for even one week without migraines. Hoping you never have another one! 🙂

Your photographs are so beautiful. I look at your blog just to enjoy the beautiful pictures. You really have an eye for composing the perfect picture. I especially loved this blog post of all the produce you saw at the market.

Your Farmer’s market produce is spectacular…vibrant colors, beautiful shapes…so much deliciousness in the photos..loved seeing your morning walk in full color. Cassis gives you such a lovely change of pace.
Thanks for the beautiful morning stroll…now off to my Farmer’s Market

  5. Beverly

Thank you for taking us on a stroll with you thru your market in Cassis. Love it! Beautiful pics as always!

Farmboy Husband just returned from our local Farmers’ Market with a big box of peach seconds (still ideal to can, for when we need a dose of mid-winter sunshine!), and a loaf of artisanal French bread. In our own garden are various vegetables as well as blueberries. ‘Tis the season…

How much are the espadrilles? It’s hard for a vegetarian woman to find non-leather shoes that are cute enough not to be ashamed of wearing.

  8. Diogenes

Love cantaloupe with ham. I would have bought a pair of the espadrilles, if they had any wide enough to fit my fat American feet, lol.
What kind of tomatoes are those? Heirlooms?

  9. They do, but the frames are not going to last and my progressive lens are expensive.

  10. Thank you xxx

  11. Less than ten euros

  12. Heirlooms.
Tell me your size and I will send you a pair.

Love that thin walled pottery, so colorful. Wonder if it would survive a trip to USA. Putting it on my wishlist for next trip to France!

  14. I love t espadrilles there, I always stock up when I’m there!

  15. Drool! Love it all!

That does it I’m coming next summer! What month is the best time to visit?

  17. Oh Corey, This post, especially, stirs up such feelings in my soul. It reminds me of my magical trip to Provence and meeting you and Ruth. Your generosity and kindness, as well as the sights, smells, tastes, and experiences made this trip far beyond my wildest dreams! I especially loved Cassis–your photos take me back to that magical little spot in the world. I am left, this Sunday morning, with memories of such a lovely experience–and a longing to be there again. I have always known a part of my spirit lives in the South of France, and now that I have been there, I feel a hole in my “being” that can only be filled if I return. Thank you for your posts, which feed my spirit. xoxox

Oh, those melons, those melons, those melons. They are like no other and I’m dreaming of them. Hope they will still be available in October.

  19. Kathie B

    Oh-la-la, I’ll take a pair of each!

Those tomatoes are more orange-y, but remind me of giant pink Belgian tomatoes. A neighbor’s father long ago gave us several seedlings, which grow huge fruit. Unfortunately, that was back before I got into seed-saving of open-pollinated varieties:

I’m also very fond of Brandywine tomatoes, which are arguably the US’s favorite heirloom variety nowadays, so sweet that even folks like me who don’t much like raw tomatoes love ’em!

  21. Tongue in Cheek

I wish I could freeze one for you.

  22. Tongue in Cheek

Ah Dixie! Thank you. We loved every minute with you and smile often when we think of our time together. So YES you must come back, the sooner the better xoxoxoxo

    In my opinion
    anytime.
But if I had to pick a time (July and August if you like the heat) though my favorite time is:
    May, June and October.

We have farmers’ markets here and I rejoice at this time of year which begins with seedlings to buy and then the local produce. Somehow it doesn’t appear quite as colourful as yours but nevertheless so enjoyable. Our free range eggs come in cardboard cartons, not a wonderful old copper bucket. I do hope Charland and I will be able to visit Cassis this fall.

  25. Swoon, I love that pottery and those espadrilles. And the color of the water during your quick boat ride. I so so so long to be there. thank you for sharing.

  26. Rebecca from the pacific northwest

Thanks for taking us on the tour! I bought some small potteries from a man there. Fun to remember. Great colors! (and those eggs in that battered copper container — I just love copper so yum!)
