The French Market What I Saw

Black is my go-to color. Safe. Always good. So imagine my surprise when at the Aix en Provence market these bright colorful splashy outfits caught my eye taking me back to a younger self. I wanted all of them. But my practical side kicked in: how many coats does one need?

If ever you are in Provence the best markets (not brocantes) are in Aix en Provence (T, TH, SA.), St Remy (W), Apt (SA), Lourmarin (F) Isle sur la Sorgue (S) St Maximum (W)…

A colorful play of plaids, flowers, strips mixed together with various types of fabrics… and it goes together or at least in my opinion it does.

Being of the shorter model this might be a  bit much, dreams of being tall are just that … a dream, and wearing

something such as this might make me look as wide as I am short. Should I care?

And before you ask… no this is not what I see French women wearing.

Though they could wear a brown paper sack and make it work.

Color is in, and patterns too but not necessarily all at once.

Little ripples instead of big splashes.

This one I liked best and regret I didn't buy the whole look.

Though I rarely care a purse…

The interior of the coat had a red base floral design.

This outfit appeared the most subtle out of this colorful lot of mix and match. The black pants probably have something to do with it…

Loved the wide legged pants.

Yellow appears to be a big color this autumn.

Would you wear or like any of these?

  1. I really love the blue purse. The color is one I gravitate towards. Like the sweater in the last photo too.

  2. Are these vintage clothes? I love the plaid coat in the fourth photo.

  3. I like the one you like or the last with the yellow, but not sure I could veer off black for a coat. I do like my blacks and greys.

  4. The 3rd photo coat def-jeans with no adornments or embellishments no do-dads around my neck except a solid scarf-elements of each photo but honestly–not one entire ensemble…..

Every single one is so chic. Remember when you pulled a sweater off a rack and I said “It looks like a test pattern on a tv to me.” You proceeded to put it on and, voila! Chic as shit, lol. You have a knack for putting together seemingly disparate pieces and just killing it. Remember we did “fashion cam” and “shoe cam” when I was there? My friends loved those photos.

  6. I tend to like all of the things you share! I think I like the multi colored plaid best.

  7. Patty Gilbert

Vote, for the giant colered plaid. I think those colors would be striking on you.

  8. Lynette Kleinfall

    Love the yellow bag

  9. I would be like you, I am drawn instantly to colour because I love it, but then I walk away and stick to blacks, greys and navy! I’ve seen a lot of red around this season, the shops here and in Bordeaux seem to be fully of vibrant bright shocking reds. I think I could be drawn away from my safety net for a touch of rouge!

  10. I do love all the colors, but like others I tend to stick to black. Your favorite is also mine. I like the burgundy and blue together and love the small silk scarf tied on the beaded necklace.

  11. Wow that is definitely different than what I’ve seen past winters in the Aix market! Love all the photos – but I agree, not what one sees locals wearing! Guess the market’s turning into the runway 😉

  12. No I wouldn’t , too busy for me. This is not t styles I expected to c at a French market. I sure enjoy looking , however. We r seeing a lot Fo bell shaped sleeves here and I’m not a fan of that either.

I think the coat you fancied is a great looking beast….nice texture, good colours, groovy lining and quite probably nice and warm….you should go back and get it or similar next time you are in the area. I love all plaid/tweed textiles and the likes……so they all looked pretty interesting to me. I pretty much only wear black or deep indigo but use jewellery and accessories to add highlights, so I know where you are coming from….Cheers from NZ

LOVE the blue and red large plaid coat!!
I’m always a sucker for a good mustardy yellow.
    Fall hugs to you.
My entire family is coming for Thanksgiving!

  15. Believe it or not, I’ve been trying on that plaid you lked so much, because, well, yes, I liked it very much too. I just try to remember on WHICH market it was – I have been travelling a bit in 4 countries lately…. I put it on and decided that I def did’nt need yet another plaid, although…. etc.
I’m probably slightly smaller than you and certainly a fair bit heavier and I honestly couldn’t care less nowadays what ‘Parisiens’ might think or not about my attire. I wear colours when I’m sad to brighten up myself, I wear comfortable but chic shoes, I put on stuff my family is gasping for air upon my arrival in the flock – life is there to live to the hilt. We just lost a very dear friend, he died in his sleep and only 5 days before we discussed that we all should size the day and whatever it brings in good things.
‘Ceci dit’, we just now emptied a bottle of champagne, Swiss Tête de Moine cheese, date toms, radishes and pastry sticks to celebrate the finishing of a longish difficult and problem-loaded replacement of all our garden lights…. our electrician said that this had never happened to him in all his life and we said: We have got a bottle of champagne yesterday for my birthday (which was on the 14th), so we hit the bottle on its top, sat out in our wonderful veranda and had a ball for 1h 30’
In short: Wear what you like, don’t think what others might think, be happy and let the sh…. of life not deter you from what you want to do.

  16. Couldn’t post this when I saw it because text was too long…..
    the missing bit was this:
I’m off to Switzerland for the burial of our dear friend, a wonderful ‘little’ guy who was GRAND in his way of living so he deserves the sacrifice of doing that in honor of his life and for his family. It’s all about choices we take – as usual.
Meanwhile I AM in Switzerland, wonderful weather, great ‘send off’ of our friend – and I’m already nearly back in France 🙂
Go for everything in life to give you joy, all which isn’t hurting anybody and creates a well-being, my dear friend…. Life is short, regrets may tend to last much much longer! 🙂

  17. Coats are like black shoes. How many pairs do we really need? (lots) Their are sooooo many cute coats that i’d love but my closet size and my more reasonable voice kicks in.

  18. I didn’t read all the comments, but did you buy an outfit, Corey?
