French Santons, Little Saints

French antique Santons, Little Saints, corey amaro

The French Nativity called the "Creche" in France is made up of  hand-painted clay figures that depict the characters of everyday village life of the eighteen century. The baker, the fisherman, the grocer, the priest, the shepherd, the fishmonger, the weaver, the gatherer of wood for the fire… The figures in clay are called Santons, or little saints in English. The Nativity set in France goes beyond the three kings, drummer boy shepherd, and the holy family it includes the entire village. The santons I like to find at the brocantes are the ones that are loved worn.

  1. Santons are such a trip back in time, showing daily routines of a vanished lifestyle. One of the churches here has crèches set up in each alcove around the nave, and a gigantic spread at the entry that’s filled with amazing santons.

  2. Very sweet. Our santons all came from Mr. Fouque in Aix, beginning in the 1960s. We have all the people you show here and love them dearly. Ours come out to play every year, and we love them all. A wonderful tradition.

  3. Mine are unpainted and came from your friend Melanie. The nativity figures are inherited from family. The stable was made by my best friend’s father years ago. The santons are out of scale to the nativity figures and stable but are still placed around them and all are very treasured

  6. I love your Santons!
