Violets

Favorite Violets.

The bravest little flower

dares to bloom before spring announces itself

Receives a white winter coat and a heavy tiara of raindrop diamonds,

Blooming purple with a note of glee.

Here I am, such a tender little flower reminding me of faithfulness against the odds, courage with grace.

What is your favorite flower?

  1. I love violets, but then I love so many flowers. It is hard to pick a favorite, but I always love daffodils because they bloom for my birthday. Then second would be roses, just because they are beautiful and smell oh so good.

  2. Diogenes

Peonies and bearded iris. That purple is beautiful.

  3. The hens are all of my violets before any flowers appeared! I love all flowers except gardenia alstroemerias which I am allergic to.

  4. white roses…my absolute favorite!

  5. Jacklynn Lantry

Peony’s. We had a peony farm for many years!

I love lily of the valley and I do have a soft spot for calla lilies and violets. I tknoe I shared this before with you but one of my favorit quotes is “Forgiveness is the scent that the violet leaves on the heel that has crushed it.” -Mark Twain

Fragrance not scent but close enough!

  8. Peonies. My mother had her mother’s plants. I can still see and smell them from my childhood-so fragrant, with their specs of red against the white petals and ants trying to get in! Alas, her peonies will not grow where I now live!

  9. Vicki Perkins

Sweet peas. Love their wild nature and gentle scent.

  10. Won’t you come into my garden…..my roses would love to meet you!

  11. Taste of France

Violets always remind me of Colette and Eliza Doolittle.
Personally, I also love peonies. My grandma had tons of them. They smell SO good.
    Also lilacs.

We have wild violets all over the place and I can’t wait till they appear again. They’re still under snow here. I guess I have a soft spot for the antique roses I grow, they are so hardy in our harsh New England climate and they have the most amazing fragrance, unlike modern hybrid types. My favorite is the White Rose of York, worn as a badge of courage by the Yorkists during England’s “War of the Roses”.

The pictures you posted of the violets fill my eyes and my heart with happiness! On the opposite end of the color spectrum are daffodils which bring my heart the same kind of joy. They also seem to be blowing kisses as they waft in the breeze. My daughter used to call them “smoochie flowers” when she was a child.

  14. daisy!!! I also always loved buttercups..simple but my grandmother used to pick them and send them to me in college in a old box (usually one that her checks had come in) yes they would be wilted and had died but just the memory makes me smile. she had them everywhere in her yard and I used to pick them when I was little!!! tulips are up there too!!

The flower that is most fragrant in the evening..
    Tuberose.
    Sniff, sniff, sniff, sniffffff.

I love ’em all, but have a special saudade for California poppies.

  17. Leslie in Oregon

Amylia Grace, one of my grandmothers was named Amelia, the other one was name Grace, and my husband’s grandmother was name Calla. And like you, I love Lilies of the Valley and Calla Lilies. Daphne Odora and Lilacs are also favorites, for their amazing fragrances and early spring appearances. I wish that violets could survive outside here.

  18. Sooo many. But sweet peas and gardenias top the list

Violets are my favorite flower. They remind me of my childhood in Pennsylvania when I used to wander into the woods to pick them. And there was a woman who sold little bouquets of them on the street corner. They were wrapped in paper lace doilies and tied with ribbon.
