Wedding Mode

While on the train somewhere between Paris and Provence I shifted gears and went from bittersweetness mood to full wedding list-making mode. Though instead of tackling the list of do's to do before July sixth, the minute I came home we went for an impromptu dinner in our friend's backyard. Cool summer evenings where the light is perfection until 10:30ish.

I am still undecided about a dress, even though my friend Francoise made one for me that I love, my nieces said it looks like a potato sack… sorry Francoise, it has nothing to do with you or your impeccable sewing, it has everything to do about my style choice of wear baggy clothing.

While in Paris this weekend I must have walked in and out of fifty or so dress shops. I saw plenty of beautiful dresses but either they were the wrong color, didn't fit the occasion, to long, too short, to low cut, to frilly, to this, to that… I might be wearing a black dress.

My Mom and older niece Patti arrive the 28th, HOW EXCITING!!

I have a few things to do yet my panic level is at the brim.

At the pizza truck the other evening Yann met our neighbor who happened to say his son was getting married, Yann chimed in that our daughter was marrying too. When Yann asked him when and where the wedding was taking place he found out that they are marrying at the same church on the same day an hour before Chelsea and Martin.

What are the odds of that happening?

And an hour before?

How does one set up a wedding five minutes before the guests arrive?

Maybe we can use the same decor?

Spontaneous, last minute, in a pinch strike my creativity this is the ultimate challenge.

Chelsea and Martin want only candles and olive branches.

Sounds easy enough.

  1. Would a belt or ribbon sash help the dress fit better? Why can’t you wear the same pretty outfit you wore to the civil ceremony?

4 pm France time and 2 AM NZ time; will be setting my alarm. I like the sound of the olive branches and candles…Chelsea is no bridezilla lol. How wonderful to have your mum visit you again, it’s been a while since she came to France. Happiest of times to come!

Corey, are you wedded (LOL!) to wearing a new outfit at the wedding? If not, is there something you already have that you really love, and always makes you feel good? I recall, e.g., a bright yellow dress that made you look like sunshine.

Very excited about the wedding. Can we see a photo of the dress your friend made? I love the outfit you wore to the civil ceremony. Did you get the package yet?

  5. Diogenes

Corey, you have great taste. Trust your instincts. Candles and olive branches, very nice.

No not yet… fingers crossed xx

You may want to consider second guessing your nieces here. I clearly remember that when I was their ages, I definitely did not recognize, much less appreciate, the visual beauty or the clothing choices of my mother and other women a generation older than I. The distance between generations loomed large then, and I had not then developed the taste that came later. (When I look now at photographs of my mother and her friends taken when I was your nieces’ ages, those women, and their clothing, strike me as gorgeous.) Try to disregard what your nieces said so that you can discern, and, as Diogenes advised, trust what your own instincts tell you. P.S. in my experience as a longtime follower of your blog and Instagram accounts, you make everything you wear look beautiful, especially when you are happy.

    Leslie, this is beautiful!

  9. Leslie in Oregon, Kathie B, Diogenes and Corey… Exactly! Take a deep breath every now and then … all will be lovely, and you already are! Simply put, comfort counts … and if you decide to wear black it is striking on you! Enjoy this special time … sending much love …

  10. Candles & olive branches sound beautiful and very romantic. The wedding will be lovley!

    I love, love your excitement!!!

  12. How wonderful that your mother will be there for the wedding! What a beautiful time you will all have!

  13. Oh… and I forgot to mention. I wore black to my daughter’s wedding.

Kathy B, we are on the same wave length. I was thinking yellow, too. It is so friendly. Second choice would be black, which is always gorgeous (and slimming).

  15. Whatever you wear, your joy will make it beautiful! I wore black at my daughter’s wedding 20 years ago and still love the look.

  16. I’m sure you will look superb. I, too, liked the outfit you wore at the civil ceremony. Maybe something identical in a new color. When I find something I like, I buy multiples then change color or accessorize differently.

Best wishes with finding your perfect dress!
    Please, what about Chelsea’s dress????????
I am on pins and needles, worrying about her and her dress. It was such a mess, the last time you mentioned it.
Please, even if you have told us, and I missed it…. Please tell us again.
    Please….

Love the apple painting. I can just imagine the stress level about now for sure. You are one busy lady. Just remember to breathe and enjoy special people all around you.

On second thought, Corey, WHY NOT wear the beautiful dress that your friend Françoise made just for you and that you say you love? No store-bought outfit could compare to the love that Françoise put into it for you.

  20. A royal wedding and now another! So glad I won’t have the get up early in NY. Can’t wait!
