Colors of a Lifetime

A green milk bucket of zinnias from my Mother's garden

sat on the yellow kitchen table a few summers ago and often many summers growing up.

Memories flood my mind whenever I see them. Childhood, my mother, and her garden, us kids riding our bikes down the lane, ice cream, cousins, summer… a strong colorful sensation of love.

What reminds you of your childhood home?

  1. Everything of my childhood was magical.
A house full of love, great company and lots of family around.
Great cooking from the kitchen and love, so much love.
    I love your memories too.
    Love Jeanne
Everyone should have a childhood full of magic.

  2. What lovely memories!
Blackberries. There were tons of wild blackberry bushes by my childhood home. Every August I would pick blackberries for Mom to make freezer jam. I discovered some blackberry bushes full of berries near my place (not childhood home) two days ago. Remembered to wear a long sleeve cotton shirt and to gather berries slowly and carefully so as to avoid the thorns.
Need to gather one more cup to have enough for freezer jam. Will bring a jar of the jam to mom’s adult family home and see if she remembers berry season.

  3. Ripe apricots (because my parents had a Blenheim tree in the backyard).
San Francisco Sourdough French bread (because the stuff here in the East is a weak imitation).

  4. Zinnas take me back to growing up and my Mother’s garden as well. I grow them just for that reason and love having them in the house. Plus, it’s like crack for bees.

  5. The smell of cow manure!

  6. I should also add… the smell of pine trees as we cruised through the more remote Canadian San Juan islands in our boat.

  7. Apple pie! Love your zinnias from your mother’s table.

  8. What vibrant colors in those zinnias!

  9. Strawberry patches and apple orchards, the blue foothills in the distance…weeping willows on the pond and watching the red and white “bobber”in hopes of a catfish nibbling…. the warmth of summer sunshine in California.

Camellias & roses & fairy cakes. Mum was known everywhere for her little cakes, she would bake 6doz at a time & give them all away. My Aunty was well known for her jelly boxes….like lamingtons but dipped in raspberry jelly & coconut. Beautiful memories of many family gatherings!

Snapdragons, pansies and zinnias! And when memorized Bible verses come to my mind. Love.

  12. My childhood memories are divided by distinct seasons. With regards to summer, memories are riding bicycle, tulips, homemade ice cream, farmers market across the state line, swimming, and drinking sweet tea!! Plus cooling off in front of fans and singing into the fans making funny voices.

  13. Vacation Bible school with good friends too.
