Judging a Book by its Cover

Books at the brocante are as plentiful as going to the library, the only difference is it outside, noisy, and you never need to return them. Books on every subject exist at the brocante: fashion, religion, history, dramas, dictionaries, and from current authors to authors whose names speak volumes: Voltaire, Racine, Proust, Hugo, Baudelaire… the list goes on. Though I prefer to buy books that are old and usually ones from the 1700s and older. Not because I am going to read them, literally, I like them because of their covers, or the engravings inside, or the deckled pages. I truly judge a book by its cover. Old, pretty, under the market value… yeah it's for me. Brocante dealers in France usually price their books on the subject, not how their covers look. How often I have said, "I buy books for their cover." As the Scandalous book alcoholic, that I am I add for good measure, "I buy them to decorate my bookshelves."

Religious books such as bibles, prayer books, missals… are the least expensive as they are plentiful.

Dominotée and parchment book covers often are the more expensive, and of course, they are the ones that knock my socks off.

Below is a peek of some of my books that reside on a church missal stand that I bought years ago for a decorative purpose only.

  1. “Scandalous book alcoholic”…I love it. I’m partial to the look of old books that have leather covers with gold embossing. Less a fan of the parchment covers. Old books, unlike antique furniture, seem to be expensive here.

  2. I just revived myself after fainting at the sight of this loveliness!

I remember seeing this in your house and thinking “She should charge admission, this is like a museum.”

  4. Loved the picture of the three of you. I met your sweet mom
maybe 4 years ago at her shop. We were heading home after a Oregon trip.
Your not going home for Halloween with all your great family?
Just wondering….. always especially enjoy your California home pictures!

I guess I’ve been a book lover all my life, and even as a little kid was drawn to the beautiful old leather bound books in the big old brick library right across the street from where we lived. I loved that place and spent countless hours there. Today I too line my shelves with wonderful old books. Some get read, some are just for decoration. The more the merrier!

We read about the flooding in southwestern France and hope you and yours are safe.

  7. So lovely and beautiful. There’s just something about being surrounded by books. It’s comforting.

  8. I love books, too…their look, their smell, and the way they feel when read. What a beautiful collection you have. The colorful set under the butterflies is lovely!

  9. Love old books, new books, and abused books. One of my weaknesses. Lovely books!
