I am Eighty

Oh, that hair color thing that I have been going back and forth on:  "Should I continue dying my hair or not?" I mostly am curious about how I would look with white hair it might be nice but I like the way my hair looks now. Yes, I could try on a wig, it would be easier.

Your comments resonated with me, I especially like knowing that we are of that age as they the French say, "Femme d'un certain âge" which is a phrase "used to avoid saying that a person, usually a woman, is no longer young but is not yet old".  We are an interesting, creative, bright a force to be reckoned with. Thank you for your encouragement and for sharing your own journeys with me. I could never stop blogging because I would MISS you too much!

The other weekend for the umpteenth time someone asked me if Yann was my son? And if that was not enough I was also asked if my friend Camy who is my age was my daughter. At this point, it doesn't even phase me. When the guy asked me I questioned him, "Does her little nose and Yann's jawline look anything remotely like mine?" He thought I was teasing, and added, "But they are your children?" I laughed while shaking my head no. The guy was so embarrassed he kept apologizing, "so are they your younger brother and sister?" I wanted to say, "You are digging a big hole there." But instead, I told him no that Camy was my age and my friend, and that Yann was my husband. He didn't believe me. So I said, "I know I look older than my age and that is all there is to it."

Later I was talking to my mom, telling her about how yet again someone thought Yann was my son, "Gee," I said, "If I let my hair go white people might start asking if I am Yann's grandmother or far worse if I am the walking dead."
My mom said, "Yeah, but if you say you are 80 they will say Wow you look great!"

I still laugh thinking about what my mom said. I might try that from now on, and if they do not say I look great I might poke their eyes out.

  1. What? You don’t look like Yan’s mom, nor your friend’s mom. You look exactly their age–your friend and Yan. That man must have been b-l-i-n-d-!!! Plus I can’t see that it’s anyone’s business how old you are–you look marvelous.
After letting my hair get naturally grey from a natural brunette, all by itself, I’m thinking about have a few blond streaks put in. What the heck.

First of all, you do NOT look your age! You are stunning. I always admired the way you dressed, your (follically gifted) hair, your perfect, shiny nails, bright and beautiful lipstick and those super stylish glasses. The guy (or anyone) who asks if Yann is your son is an *#&%hole (pardon my french;) My # 1 criteria for dressing is “Is it comfy?” Hence I often look like a sensible schlump. Sometimes I feel bad about it, but mostly I feel grateful to feel and be comfortable. Here’s a story to make you feel better. When I went to pick up my daughter Sophia at the Chinese orphanage a teeny, tiny Chinese women asked me if I was pregnant (I was not.) Thinking quickly I replied “Yes! Nearly 8 months along!” The next remarks were about how good I looked as a super pregnant lady.

PS, I forgot to add that you are one of my style icons. If I ever tried to be stylish again I would to you:) for advice.

  4. Maybe if you are the one taking charge in the conversation at first they assume you are the parent figure….I don’t know, but I think you and Yann look the same age. And that said, I don’t even think you look your age!

  5. you look fab ! seriously …Happy Birthday …..

  6. There’s always a twit with no social filter lurking to burst your happy little bubble when you least expect it.
I often am amused when out shopping with my mother and shop assistants assume that she is my friend…when
I say that she is my mother the looks on their faces are hilarious. My mother is tiny and shorter than me and I’m a big girl; I just think that they’re surprised
that my mother has such a large baby. I’ve come to enjoy their obvious discomfort. It’s not your age or hair colour that matters, it’s your attitude and outlook on life!! XX

  7. OMG!! Are you kidding me? You do NOT look older than your age and you do NOT look like you
could possibly be Yann’s mother. What is wrong with those umpteen people, do they all need to have their eyes
checked? That is just bizarre, that’s all I have to say.

  8. Wow, how RUDE! If anyone ever asked me if Farmboy Husband were my son, or if a friend’s who’s my age were my daughter, I’d give ’em the ol’ stink-eye, while SILENTLY thinking to myself (and it showing all over my face) that they should go eff themselves! Then I’d turn on my heel and walk away without having said a word.

  9. RebeccaNYC

Seriously? I’m kind of got-smacked by the rudeness of this whole thing. I’m glad you have a good sense of humor, and a youthful outlook on life, this gives you the last laugh. (That plus the fact you get to go home with that “younger man”! Go get ’em girl)

  10. Can’t imagine how anyone could think you were Yann’s mother! You both look the same age and that would be younger than you actually are! You always look so cute, Corey. Always stylish – never old!

  11. OMG! YOUR Mom is terrific,,,,and has the right attitude to living life…
A side note, you do not look old or older than Yann,,, that man was rude and ridiculous and needing glasses!
It has been so long ago I forgot what your hair color use to look like?
anyway why not experiment and go brownish with blond high- lights, or reddish & brown, but not blue or pink.. State side, I have seen women older women at that
sporting “blue” hair, or pink and even orange hair… it worked for cindy lauper , but hey that was in the 80’s…

  12. And… you have beautiful hair. It would be gorgeous any color!!!

  13. You have style and a smile and look wonderful!

  14. Vicki Perkins

I so relate to the hair coloring issue. I turned 70 years old and in the following week I got called “ma’am” THREE times🤨. I went to the hair stylist and after a long, philosophical and pragmatic conversation we decided on a slate-colored glaze. It evened out my various frosts over the last few months and gave me an interesting new color…come summer I will probably go back to a heavy frosted blonde. The silver is a pretty color but I feel like I look washed out and my hair has more body when it has color. It is a dilemma.

  15. What?! Crazy!!!
Ok, I met you, that one brief shining moment, at the SFO airport, after a 12 hour flight, and you looked lovely!! I would never in a million years have thought you were older than your husband! You both looked remarkably well after our flight.
You shine from within with a light that springs from joy. Truth.
What ever you decide about your hair, you’ll look amazing.
    P.S. I love your mom’s remark!!! 🙂

  16. Bah. The guy was an idiot. Blind on top of that. I once had a woman ask that of the man J was with. At the time it was true. I looked older because he was driving me to an early grave!

  17. I love your mom! And I love you😘. That person was clearly digging a huge hole and deserved his embarrassment. You are beautiful inside and out.

  18. Ann of Avondale

Ouch! If you get asked that a lot, I wonder what are they thinking? At work when this woman turned 50 she said, “I don’t look cute anymore.” There is that age when women leave the cute stage and start aging – gracefully (hopefully).
From your pictures you and Yann don’t look years apart. You don’t have to explain anything just consider the source. Don’t engage in a personal conversation with these mindless men, just the weather and the price of the item. If they ask you about Yann, tell them he is your chauffeur.

  19. You do NOT look old enough to be Yann’s mother. That is just nuts. You look adorable.

  20. Ed Schnurbusch

Just tell people that Yann is your boy toy. You needed a younger man who could keep up with you.

  21. I am 15 years older than my husband. He already has a lovely salt and pepper hair/beard. I just turned 58 and am transitioning my hair to grey. I may look older than him, I do not know. And, honestly, I do not care. Having said that, since my 40s I tend to tell people I am 10 years solder just to have them praise me 🙂
But now, after I read Ed’s comment, I am going to say that I am 65 and if someone ask I will say that my husband is my boy toy. :-)))
You do not look like you could be Yann’s mom. The guy was way out of line with his insistence.

  22. I don’t think you or Yann look sixty. You exude energy and youthfulness !! That guy must have horribly skewed vision or just an A%#@*!! Pardon me…
You look absolutely gorgeous as a blonde but with that lovely hair I think you could pull anything off!!
    Best wishes!

  23. At my younger sister’s college graduation (she is 5 years younger), her friend’s mother thought my younger sister was my daughter! At the time, I was devastated…now I celebrate my age!

  24. Chris Wittmann

Whatever your age Corey, you look great! You could pass for a much younger woman. I’ll be 67 this Spring and I still color my hair once every 6-7 weeks but I use a color with no ammonia, and I leave it on less than five minutes and apply it sparingly. The result is I still see greys at my temple and part area and it looks pretty natural. I don’t try to color every hair so it looks like it could actually be my real hair color. As a friend once told me, “as long as there’s Clairol in a bottle…I’m not going to go grey!!” I’ve been lucky to look younger than my years all my life, good genes I guess but when my face starts to wrinkle up I’ll let my hair go grey 🙂

  25. Jennifer Phillipps

Reading some of the comments I can only agree that all those folk who asked if you were Yann’s mother, need an eye check and very strong glasses! You look perfectly your present age, which is much the same age as me and you surely do not look 80! Keep the hair blonde and add some silver streaks into it and see how that goes, a bit of both worlds!! Cheers

  26. I really like the color in today’s photos! It’s a softer tone of blonde. Just perfect for your youthful attitude and style!!!!

  27. Leonie BUCHANAN

Men are dumb!! Or at least some are.
I have a dear friend who is 82, someone asked her age & she said 92, the person was surprised, after awhile she told her her correct age & the woman made no comment 🤣🤣
I had my daughter dressed in pink as a baby & a guy said what a bonny boy she was 🤣🤣🤣
I am blonde with fair skin, eyebrows & lashes….this dumb guy asked me if I was a natural blonde…I ask you what type of male asks you that. I nearly said ‘do you want me to really prove it’ 🤣 would have had to drop my pants 😛😛😛😛
You definitely don’t look like Yann’s mother, what next when your grandson arrives they will congratulate you on being GG , that’s what my Mum was called.
Keep your hair blonde it looks lovely & tell people to take a long run off a short pier 😍😍😍

  28. I love your hair and I would keep it blonde. My (male) Dermatologist said to me, “yesterday I was dining in a restaurant and there was a table of Senior Citizen ladies. One looked younger than the rest. why do you think that was?” I answered because one colored their hair? Yes, that was the answer. I am 73 and still color my hair red as it’s been my whole life. My mother was proud to be a blonde and she kept it that way until she passed away at 82.
You would look great either way, but I vote for the blonde.

  29. Corey tu es si radiante, n’ importe quelle couleurs des cheveux zu portes :-))
    Tina xxx

  30. …. personnellement je préfère : blonde et aussi blonde/argenté *y*
    T xx

  31. When I married Hero Husband, I was already white/grey. When I asked him if he’d wish me to ‘go back’ to my natural blonde (before, I got white very early), his reply was: I never knew you when you were not white, so WHY should you colour your hair…. Now the point: He is MUCH younger than me and for him I’d have done that (although I’m against fxxking up what nature meant differently). I wanted to stay beautiful and attractive for him and thought that if not he might want to stare after much younger women!!!! NO NO NO – he knew exactly what he got with me and as he looked more mature than his age and I much younger than mine, people who didn’t know us never figured out that we are not of the same age….. There, it’s WHO you are and HOW Y-O-U feel not what anybody thinks or says.

  32. Sharon Crigger-Stokan

Oh Corey, your posts always make me smile in some way! I don’t understand how anyone could think Yann was your son…silly people. That is not an insult to Yann, but a compliment to you. And I love your mom’s suggestion!

  33. Your mom is a wise woman. Let us know if you try it.
I have always looked younger than my age. When I was young I hated it, but now it is to my advantage. Family genes do play tricks.

  34. Carol Berger

Whatever age you are and whatever age you will be, you’ll always look fabulous! Your spirit and zest will always belie your chronological age. You make us happy to know you even if only through your wonderful blog! Pretty soon you’re going to have a very lucky grandchild! Lucky to have a very fun grandmother. Oh, btw, I love your hair color!

  35. You are so beautiful and do not look older than your age and, if anything, look younger. Your spirit is especially young and vibrant and brings me so much joy.

  36. Dixie Crane

Well, since I’ve seen you I have short, naturally grey hair. I decided that I’m old so I should embrace it. My ex is 16 yes. my junior. I always wondered if people thought I was his mother.

  37. Dixie Crane

…and you absolutely do not look like Yann’s mother!!!
