September 11th Twenty Years

Where were we that moment still fresh in our minds?

Where are we now and have we learned?

What peace do we have, do we offer

to those who died that day

to their families

and to those in Afghanistan the millions who died after the towers went down?

Tragedy …

hate offers a brutal response

and somehow makes some of us have tunnel vision

Eye for an eye.

Such sadness at every angle, every corner, on those stairs

and on the other planes that day.

No we won't ever forget.

Can we forgive?

How, why did this happen?

Where did it start?

Can we bring healing instead of more hate?

Can we …

  1. Yes! kindness and love must overcome hate.

  2. Even twenty years later, I still find it difficult to understand how I feel. How could we have blamed the Afghanis when the larger number of hijackers were Saudis? And how could Bush have invaded Iraq and unleashed the Pandora’s Box that has led us in too many different directions? I am still grieving and trying to digest the horror.

We try, but it’s difficult when others hate you just for engaging you

  4. The dreamer within me sees a world where we could live in peace and harmony.
The realist within me knows that mankind will continue on its destructive path as it has since the beginning. In a world so full of greed for power, for wealth, for temporary thrones the meaning of “humanity” is lost.
Individually, we can control our own actions and refuse to be part of the problem by the choices we make but long gone is my own naïveté that I could change the world.
The silver lining, if there is one, of the ugliness of mankind, is that it emphasizes the “goodness” of the pure souls among us that keep hope and faith alive.

  5. Bonsoir à tous,
So many questions, so few answers, plenty of both even 20 years later.
We had received the keys to our flat in Nice a few days before, but due to my commitments to two non-profits back in the U$ we rescheduled our flight to NYC and traveled a day in advance.
Sitting in the board room when the news was delivered that a second plane had struck the other tower, we wrapped our meeting and begin to plan next steps. The president of the board was/is with the Red Cross so work was waiting for all.
My colleague from the west cost chapter of the same non-profit was on a top floor of one of the towers; she phone her husband to tell him she would not be home and that she loved him.
Today marks the second most sad day of these horrific events; the U$ had the heart and support of the world only to squander it for the following 20+ years.
    I have no words.
