Today is my mother’s birthday.
She baked two cakes, « in case anyone comes over »,
my mother is thoughtful of others, even on her birthday.
Birthdays highlight the time that has passed between one year to the next. There is a tradition in Provence to remove one of the lite candles from their birthday cake, put it aside, then watch it slowly burn down. While the candle slowly burns those gather reflect about the year that has passed.
When I think of the year that has passed by for my mom my heart is full, it hasn’t been as one would have hoped.
And yet here she is baking cakes to greet those who will certainly come to visit her.
My mom is a hero when it comes to trailblazing faith, courage, and above all love.
