Au Bain Marie in Paris

Au Bain Marie in Paris

As I am in Paris counting down the days before the baby arrives with Chelsea and Co.

I am rediscovering old haunts and new wonders. Au Bain Marie

(A bain-marie, a type of heated bath, is a piece of equipment used in science, industry, and cooking to heat

materials gently or to keep materials warm over a period of time. A bain-marie is also used to melt ingredients for cooking)

I stumbled upon while walking back and forth from our apartment to Chelsea and Co.'s apartment (five miles) Au Bain Marie is

chock full and I mean CHOCK FULL!

The window display changes often enough that I could not help myself to go inside and take a peek. A mixture of the old and new tabletop is available

anything and everything for the table. Of course, I wanted to set a table right there and then with the variety they had.

Silver, faience, egg cups, crystal, salt shakers, silverware, teacups, plates, plates, plates, majolica, champagne buckets, baskets, pitchers, creamers, wine paraphernalia, picnic baskets, knife rest…

etc. etc. etc. etc… etc.!

Unfortunately, my pictures do not do it justice, I was snapping away not thinking I would share the photos though when I came home

I had to share what I saw in case you do not know of this place and for you to mark it down if ever you are in Paris-

There is something for everyone who enjoys mealtime and or a beautiful table.

The prices are fair and varied, the owners generously helpful and knowledgable.

"Aude Clément created Au Bain Marie in 1977 initiating the idea of concept stores with antiques and new table art collections such as tableware, embroidered linen, and gastronomic books. These elements create a universe marrying cultural heritage and modernity through the art of entertaining.

After studying architecture at Beaux Art and them at Camondo School, Aude Clément became a journalist for prestigious magazines (Figaro magazine, Gault et Millau, Nouvel Economiste, Cosmopolitan , Lui etc…). At this time, she decided to design and edit the objects she needed to illustrate her articles. Her first store was created.

In 1987, she opened a 600m2 store located between the Hotel Crillon and Hermes where she featured artists like Cindy Sherman, Ettore Sottsass, Richard Meier, Franck Evennou, as well as the Memphis furniture collection, all these displayed with a remarkable selection of tableware.

Today, Au Bain Marie has two locations on Paris left bank : a gallery at 56 rue de l'université and a store at 59 boulevard Raspail near Sèvres Babylone and behind the Lutetia Palace.

After working as an engineer, César Clément sharing his mother's passion has joined her to develop and promote Au Bain Marie's collections in France and all over the world." Au Bain Marie.

"To contemplate, to dream, let beauty nourish your soul, with exceptional objects you’d find at the Victoria & Albert  Museum, the Orsay Museum, or the Decorative Arts museum, find them here. Offer yourself the pleasure of admiring these treasures in your home.

There is magic in such diverse styles of silverware; from the end of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, with unusual, surprising objects for the table. With talented designers or silversmiths are known worldwide; Buccellati, Puiforcat, Têtard, Christophe, Gallia, Asprey, Tiffany……a fine choice of champagne buckets, teapots, salt shakers, trays." 1. Wow! Fantastique!

  2. Aladdin’s cave – one could get lost in there!

  3. Love those red and white seafood plates. We could put our charge cards in 5th gear and then go to
Ladurée and stuff ourselves. Je vois la vie en rose…

5 miles each way. You are in great shape chica!!!! Au Bain Marie would both drive me nuts with the clutter and intrigue me with the treasures.

I LOVE Au Bain Marie. I’ve been able to visit it every time I’ve been in Paris.
Isn’t it funny that there isn’t a phrase in English to say. “bain Marie”? I learned it in Spanish early in life when learning to make “flan”. (Baño María)
