A blue-grey paper candy box with gold lettering.

Chocolate-covered chestnuts from Ardeche, an antique candy box without any chocolates.

I prefer that way when it comes to old boxes.

Baptismal-candy-box

A French baptismal candy box. In France, Jordan almonds were given by the Godfather, and candy boxes such as this were commonplace during the turn of the century.

A round candy box with embossed siding, a personage scene on top, with a  silver wire ribbon around the edge.
Who needs chocolates in a box like this? Did I say that?

Boxes like these were kept to hold trinkets and used on vanity tables.

An individual antique candy box (Aren't they all individual?) dated 1893.

I love the details, for example, the pleated rounded corners.

French-candy-tins

Candy tins from Carpentras, for complex fruit flavor, candy drops. Carpentras was famous for such as well as for dried sweetened fruits. Jouvaud, a beautiful family-owned bakery, pastry, and candy shop in Carpentras and Isle sur la Sorgue, still makes the candies traditionally: Fruits such as strawberries, figs, and melon.

Baby blue, candy favor boxes. Imagine a wide satin ribbon attached. These would have been given to the guests at a baptism party.

Pink-candy-bag

A pink antique candy bag.

Epherma is delicate, not a long-term purpose item; finding a candy bag from the turn of the century is golden.

What will people collect from us in a hundred years? Cell phone cords? Big red plastic cups? M&M wrappers?

Will they find our old stuff beautiful?

French vintage candy bags

I prefer these old "bonbons fins" fine candy bags to the newer ones, and I like Chocolate Kisses and Big Hunk …

Is it just me, or do those candies have sexy names? Bonbon Fins is right!

Romantic-candy-box

Romance in Venice, a French souvenir of Venicenqon a candy box lid.

"Darling?"
"Yes Princess?"
"I love the pink curtains and your white socks."
"Thank you, My Princess."
"Darling?"
"Yes my Princess?"
"Cut the Princess stuff and give me a chocolate, would you!"

Digestives.

A candy for everything and purpose.

Even medicinal.

What is your favorite candy?

  1. “What will people collect from us in a hundred years?”
I’ve thought about that quite often while scanning family photos from the late 1800s through the 1970s. Also converting 8mm film to mp4 files. a lot of photos taken since digital became a thing, but how many printed photos? Those printed snapshots will be valuable in the future.

Rocky Road candy bars have always been my favorite since I was little. They are still made by hand to this day. I just love chocolate and marshmallow.

  3. SO PRETTY and SO INTERESTING.

  4. Louis Sherry makes some beautiful candy tins today. They are keepers.
