Would that it were always so.
However, anyone who’s ever watched Dr. Henry Louis Gates’ superb TV series “Finding Your Roots” knows that nearly all African-Americans (and some others) are descended from enslaved Black women who were raped by their owners in order to produce more chattel (and wealth) for their owners.
How do I know this? Because in the course of his genealogical research, DH discovered one such enslaved child was his great-great-grandfather. And we have a copy of the newspaper clipping reporting how that man’s son (DH’s great-grandfather) was beaten and shot (i.e., lynched) and left for dead.
Luckily, he survived his wounds. But unsurprisingly, he soon headed north, where he “passed.”
WELL I JUST LOVE THIS THOUGHT!!
