The 1700s metal procession shield is a fantastic find; it is a rare item that collectors appreciate like me. These shields are painted with scenes of religious iconography. What makes these shields particularly fascinating is that they were designed to be used in religious processions, with a grip to hold onto and a place for a candle behind the painting.
I saw some of these shields in person a few years ago at a lovely free museum in Aix en Provence. The beauty and history of these pieces completely took me aback. Knowing more about my shield represented in the museum was a wonderful surprise.
Recently, I found several of these shields for sale on a beautiful antique website called Proantics. The colors of the shields for sale are vibrant and intact, unlike my shield which has suffered fading over time. However, my shield has its unique story of being discovered at a brocante, making it not so costly and endearing that I found such a piece.
