Judy’s Booklet about Our Va Amaro

With days that often feel blurred, where memories can easily fade, connections to those we love matter, as do stirring up memories to help us define and keep alive our stories. When I was home my cousin Judy brought over a thoughtful little scrapbook that she had made about my Dad’s mother. The scrapbook held a few photos, heartfelt text, and a keyhole to the past.

Judy paired the photos with little anecdotes, and personal notes that spoke tenderly of the very heartbeat of our grandmother.

Family, home, a wedding photo,

And a photo I hadn’t seen before.

I love your site! All four of my grandparents, dairy farmers, were from the Azores…maternal from Terceira, paternal from Sao Jorge. My parents, Joe and Mary, met at the Modesto festa, my two brothers and I were raised on a 288 acre dairy ranch near Salida, CA. We had a variety of neighbors on our road, a German born family – watched by the FBI during WW2, Swiss Italian, Swiss German, Okies from Oklahoma, a British war bride, an older couple from the Azores, two Japanese families who grew strawberries, also watched by the FBI, the father helped the FBI keep track of other local Japanese families.
