The Woods Behind Our House

“If you go down in the woods today, you’re sure of a big surprise
If you go down in the woods today, you’d better go in disguise.

For every bear that ever there was will gather there for certain
Because today’s the day the teddy bears have their picnic

Every teddy bear who’s been good is sure of a treat today
There’s lots of marvellous things to eat and wonderful games to play
Beneath the trees where nobody sees they’ll hide and seek as long as they please

That’s the way the teddy bears have their picnic

Picnic time for teddy bears
The little teddy bears are having a lovely time today
Watch them, catch them unawares and see them picnic on their holiday

See them gaily gad about
They love to play and shout
They never have any cares
At six o’clock their mummies and daddies will take them back home to bed
Because they’re tired little teddy bears

If you go down in the woods today, you better not go alone
It’s lovely down in the woods today, but safer to stay at home

For every bear that ever there was will gather there for certain
Because today’s the day the teddy bears have their picnic.”

“The Teddy Bears’ Picnic” is a song consisting of a melody written in 1907 by American composer John Walter Bratton, and lyrics added in 1932 by Irish songwriter Jimmy Kennedy.

  2. I used to sing this to our daughter when she was a baby. When she was old enough to talk she demanded I sing….at 6 o’clock their Mummies & Daddies & Samantha would take them home to bed….
Samantha will be 54 this year!!

  3. I love this post and pics of Gabriel walking in the woods. Brings back memories of one of my favorite days teaching kindergarten. The kids would bring their favorite teddy bear or stuffy and we would sing this song as we picnicked and did lots of bear crafts.

    1. How sweet!!!

  4. Oh a teddy bear picnic right there in the woods would be wonderful. What a lovely place for your little ones to imagine and play.

And Teddy Bears know just how to picnic…
You’ve inspired me to arrange a Teddy Bear Picnic for my three-year-old granddaughter, Luna. We have a tea set and dishes she loves to “make believe” and a plethora of bears. We’ll invite all of them, even Pepper, he’s a bear I made about thirty years ago. He, Luna and the other bears will have a marvelous time. If only we had the woods you are so fortunate to have in your own back yard. Oh well…our “not so scary” backyard will do just fine. Merci!
